Christmas turned a lot merrier for about 1,000 children who received a present Saturday at an Oxnard church, courtesy of the Ventura County Rescue Mission.

The annual Christmas with a Mission event took place at Faith Community Church, with more than 200 volunteers handing out presents and staffing game booths, a bounce house and more.

A mobile health clinic was also set up at the church, offering health screenings, flu shots and other medical services.

The toys given away at the event were donated by local residents who had been running toy drives all through December. Motor4Toys, based in Thousand Oaks, also made a generous toy donation, according to Suzanne West, community relations coordinator for the rescue mission.
