Out of the Miry Clay

Man Standing Outside

“I met this guy named Jimmy. He was in the Fresh Start Program. He told me, ‘Instead of staying in your car, why don’t you come to the mission?’ At first I was resistant. Time went on and that is when my car broke down. I couldn’t stay in my car anymore. I prayed about it, and the Lord drew me to the Mission,” Peter says.

He continues, “Before that, I had gotten sick. I had a major surgery. I had a tumor in my lung. After being in the hospital, I didn’t qualify for disability, so I was living with my sisters. It took time to recover and I don’t like to be a burden to anyone; I had to get out. I found myself in a pit. It was a physical and spiritual pit. I said, ‘I have to get out of this.’”

Peter shares, “The Fresh Start Program is giving me a chance to go from living in my car to getting back on my feet again, getting a job, having a place to live, and starting a career. If I didn’t have God’s Word, I don’t know what I would have done. It kept me alive, it gave me courage, and it brought spiritual healing. I feel healed since I’ve been here. That is the beginning part of anything. It is God’s Word and the healing of your mind and body.”

As to his future, Peter affirms, “I’m working and at the same time looking for better work. I see a successful future. I want to get my old job back and get back into a home. I just need to focus on God’s Word daily. I would say to those in need, come to the Mission. They really help you and they really care. I love the orientation classes in the morning. It gives you strength and encouragement for the day. I would say that I am thankful and grateful to be here. Your gifts are really helping. Give and you will be blessed!”
