About 1,800 toys were given away to Ventura County’s neediest children on Saturday as the Ventura County Rescue Mission held its annual Community Christmas Celebration at an Oxnard church.

More than 220 volunteers helped distribute toys and oversee the youngsters as they jumped in a bounce house, watched balloon artists, decorated both ornaments and cookies and played games. The Oxnard Police Department brought its armored vehicle used by its SWAT teams.

A mobile health clinic offered flu shots and health screenings, and the Tobacco Bus was set up to warn youngsters about the dangers of smoking.

The event took place at Faith Community Church on South D Street.
