Meet Reed Gibson
Chaplain, RMA VC
In 2022, Reed Gibson joined the RMA Ventura County team as a chaplain. After 20 years as an engineer, Reed decided to focus more on his heart for ministry and community. Reed uses his prior experience in ministry and as a youth pastor to now “live his dream” of full-time ministry. He’s also excited to share his love of music, participating in RMA VC’s worship team as singer and guitarist.
Outside the Mission, Reed is “super close” with his family. He and his wife of 40 years, Debbie, have a son, O.J., 32, and daughter, Allison, 30. Reed loves playing his guitar, hiking, and going to the beach. “At my age, I just have to keep moving,” Reed laughed.
Sascha: Had you heard of the Mission before you began working as a chaplain?
Reed: I knew about the Mission, but I had never served here before. One of the reasons that working at the Rescue Mission appealed to me is that… I had (previously) volunteered to go to the Ventura County Jail once a month for about four years to witness to the inmates there. One of the things that I found so heartbreaking was the number of men that I talked to who were on their second, third, fourth trip to jail because they couldn’t beat their addictions. They would get sober in jail and then just return to their broken lifestyle outside. I knew that working at the Mission would give me the opportunity to give those men something more lasting than just my brief time with them at the jail.
What was your first impression of the Mission?
The thing that was so exciting the first day, first week, first month, was the positive vibes here in the interactions with the guys. We all have a common reason for being here and I was so invigorated the first time I saw that. Then, many of the guys who serve here are former graduates! It was so encouraging to me because they were ‘all in’. When I see people totally committed to something, that gets me really excited. I thought, “Wow, this is a great place to be!”
Plus, I realized quickly that I use so much of my skills here. I’m making a difference and helping people.
Is that, using your skills and helping people, your favorite part?
Well, my favorite part is working with guys that I can tell are getting it (the program). They connect with the material, they connect with you, and are really tracking with you. When it begins to make sense to them, that’s when it’s really special.
I’m always learning on the job and I find that incredibly invigorating! It stretches my mind, it makes me research, I put everything I can to help people the best I can.
What keeps you going?
I “press on.” Philippians 3:13-14 says, “… forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”
When you work in something and that something counts for eternity, that’s something better than any other type of job you can have... This is the best job I could ever have.
I’m learning something new every day, perfecting what I do, and keeping it up. I’m 67 now and I’m not ready to retire. I’m going to keep going for as long as I can.

Capellán, RMA VC

Fuera de la Misión, Reed es “muy cercano” a su familia. Él y su esposa de 40 años, Debbie, tienen un hijo, O.J., de 32 años, y una hija, Allison, de 30. A Reed le encanta tocar la guitarra, hacer senderismo e ir a la playa. “A mi edad, tengo que seguir moviéndome”, se rió Reed.
Sascha: ¿Había oído hablar de la Misión antes de comenzar a trabajar como capellán?
Reed: Sabía de la Misión, pero nunca antes había servido aquí. Una de las razones por las que me atrajo trabajar en la Misión de Rescate es que... (anteriormente) me había ofrecido como voluntario para ir a la cárcel del condado de Ventura una vez al mes durante unos cuatro años para testificar a los reclusos allí. Una de las cosas que encontré tan desgarradora fue la cantidad de hombres con los que hablé que estaban en su segundo, tercer y cuarto viaje a la cárcel porque no podían vencer sus adicciones. Se volverían sobrios en la cárcel y luego simplemente regresarían a su estilo de vida destrozado afuera. Sabía que trabajar en la Misión me daría la oportunidad de darles a esos hombres algo más duradero que solo mi breve tiempo con ellos en la cárcel.
¿Cuál fue su primera impresión de la Misión?
Lo que fue tan emocionante el primer día, la primera semana, el primer mes, fueron las vibraciones positivas aquí en las interacciones con los chicos. Todos tenemos una razón común para estar aquí y me sentí muy revitalizado la primera vez que lo vi. Entonces, ¡muchos de los muchachos que sirven aquí son ex graduados! Fue muy alentador para mí porque estaban "todos dentro". Cuando veo gente totalmente comprometida con algo, eso me emociona mucho. Pensé: "¡Guau, este es un gran lugar para estar!"
Además, rápidamente me di cuenta de que uso muchas de mis habilidades aquí. Estoy marcando la diferencia y ayudando a la gente.
¿Es esa tu parte favorita, usar tus habilidades y ayudar a las personas?
Bueno, mi parte favorita es trabajar con chicos que puedo decir que están entendiendo (el programa). Se conectan con el material, se conectan contigo y realmente están siguiendo contigo. Cuando empieza a tener sentido para ellos, es cuando es realmente especial.
¡Siempre estoy aprendiendo en el trabajo y eso me parece increíblemente estimulante! Me amplía la mente, me hace investigar, pongo todo lo que puedo para ayudar a las personas lo mejor que puedo.
¿Qué te mantiene en marcha?
Yo "sigo adelante". Filipenses 3:13-14 dice: “…olvidándome de lo que queda atrás y extendiéndome a lo que está por delante, prosigo hacia la meta, al premio del supremo llamamiento de Dios en Cristo Jesús”.
Cuando trabajas en algo y ese algo cuenta para la eternidad, eso es algo mejor que cualquier otro tipo de trabajo que puedas tener... Este es el mejor trabajo que podría tener.
Aprendo algo nuevo todos los días, perfecciono lo que hago y sigo así. Ahora tengo 67 años y no estoy listo para jubilarme. Voy a seguir así mientras pueda.
