Introducing Erika Rodriguez, Store Lead at Oxnard Super Thrift

Erika began her RMA journey as a volunteer. At first, Erika thought she was only going to be helping the thrift store temporarily, but an “unfortunate, really bad day” changed Erika’s path.

“I had $800 stolen from me,” Erika said. “That was money for my kids’ school supplies. I remember I was crying because that was the only money I had. I had very limited income.”

However, Brad Lawson (the thrift supervisor at the time) had signed up every volunteer to receive children’s school supplies and clothing through a community church. Erika assumed it would be items from the thrift stores, but instead, it was all brand-new items. “The money that I had lost didn’t matter. My kids still received everything they needed: shoes, backpacks, uniforms, less than an hour after my money was stolen,” Erika recalls tearfully. “In my heart, I know it was all God. And it still impacts me to this day.

“That was the day I knew I was going to do the best that I could, even if I only remained a volunteer. I wanted to be a part of this.”

Shortly after, Erika was officially hired as an employee, working from floor associate to store lead over the past six years. While the theft incident contributed to Erika’s decision to work at Super Thrift, the mission and purpose of RMA is what motivates Erika. One of her favorite parts of the day is her time spent with the program clients – often working together to prepare the store in the morning. This is particularly personal to Erika.

“In my culture, rehab or recovery is not as popular as I would like it to be and that I’m praying for it to be,” she said. “I had a cousin who was like my brother. He was homeless and burned bridges in our family. We didn’t know how to help him. He reached out to someone else who turned out to be evil.”

Instead of receiving help, her cousin was murdered. “My cousin wasn’t able to get help, but I know other people can. I want that for them. I am proud to work for an organization that is a helping hand, the helping hand of God.”

Erika emphasizes that every employee plays a role in helping those RMA serves and is excited for the opportunities to get to know others in the organization. “We have to work together. We all matter. Each one of us is an important brick for the road we’re trying to pave.

“I’m excited for what’s to come. Reading John (Stassi’s) story last month was really cool! It motivated me to do it too, even if at first it may be uncomfortable, but you can learn so much from other people. People’s stories are important. The different perspectives are important.”

Erika’s team player mentality is recognized by Maria Olaiz, Oxnard Super Thrift Supervisor. “Erika actively contributes ideas for improvement and demonstrates a willingness to collaborate with her colleagues to achieve common goals,” she said. “Her positive attitude, professionalism, and commitment make her an asset to our team.”

And Erika is a team player outside of the store – participating in Corporate Games! This year, she’s excited to participate in kickball. “It’s cool to just get out and meet other people. Even if you don’t play, I hope people come and support. I’m praying we just all get connected.”

Erika is a “super proud mother” who resides in South Oxnard with her five children: Alberto, 17; Hailey, 15; Erika Jr., 12; Daisey, 10; and Aaron, 9. She also has eight birds, courtesy of her children, including two doves, Tangerine and Peach; two button quails, Manky and Snickers; two parakeets, Fruit Loops and Juliet; and two cockatiels, Ash and Baby.

Mis hijos aún recibieron todo lo que necesitaban: zapatos, mochilas, uniformes, menos de una hora después de que me robaran el dinero", recuerda Erika llorando. "En mi corazón, sé que todo fue obra de Dios. Y aún me impacta hasta el día de hoy.

"Ese fue el día en que supe que iba a hacer lo mejor que pudiera, incluso si solo seguía siendo voluntaria. Quería ser parte de esto".
Poco después, Erika fue contratada oficialmente como empleada, trabajando desde asociada de piso hasta líder de tienda en los últimos seis años. Mientras que el incidente del robo contribuyó a la decisión de Erika de trabajar en Super Thrift, la misión y el propósito de RMA es lo que motiva a Erika. Una de sus partes favoritas del día es el tiempo que pasa con los clientes del programa, a menudo trabajando juntos para preparar la tienda por la mañana. Esto es particularmente personal para Erika.

"En mi cultura, la rehabilitación o la recuperación no son tan populares como me gustaría que fueran y por lo que estoy orando que sean", dijo. "Tuve un primo que era como mi hermano. Estaba sin hogar y rompió puentes en nuestra familia. No sabíamos cómo ayudarlo. Se acercó a alguien más que resultó ser malvado". En lugar de recibir ayuda, su primo fue asesinado. "Mi primo no pudo recibir ayuda, pero sé que otras personas pueden. Quiero eso para ellos. Estoy orgullosa de trabajar para una organización que es una mano amiga, la mano amiga de Dios".

Erika enfatiza que cada empleado juega un papel en ayudar a aquellos a quienes sirve RMA y está emocionada por las oportunidades de conocer a otros en la organización. "Tenemos que trabajar juntos. Todos importamos. Cada uno de nosotros es un ladrillo importante para el camino que estamos tratando de pavimentar.

"Estoy emocionada por lo que está por venir. ¡Leer la historia de John (Stassi) el mes pasado fue realmente genial! Me motivó a hacerlo también, incluso si al principio puede ser incómodo, pero se puede aprender mucho de otras personas. Las historias de la gente son importantes. Las diferentes perspectivas son importantes".

La mentalidad de jugador de equipo de Erika es reconocida por María Olaiz, Supervisora de Oxnard Super Thrift. "Erika contribuye activamente con ideas para mejorar y demuestra una disposición para colaborar con sus colegas para lograr objetivos comunes", dijo. "Su actitud positiva, profesionalismo y compromiso la convierten en un activo para nuestro equipo".

Y Erika es una jugadora de equipo fuera de la tienda, ¡participando en Corporate Games! Este año, está emocionada de participar en el juego de kickball. "Es genial simplemente salir y conocer a otras personas. Incluso si no juegas, espero que la gente venga a apoyar. Estoy orando para que todos nos conectemos".

Erika es una "súper orgullosa madre" que reside en South Oxnard con sus cinco hijos: Alberto, 17; Hailey, 15; Erika Jr., 12; Daisey, 10; y Aaron, 9.
