From the Director – September

School is in session! For many, it’s an exciting time. There are children whose parents have enough money to provide them with everything needed to start the school year off right. But there are many who do struggle.

I remember at an event, one little boy tugged on the dress of Suzanne West, our community relations coordinator. He asked if he could have a No. 2 pencil; he needed one for school, but he was afraid to ask his mom, for they have very little money.

That is why every fall we hold our annual giveaway, handing out hundreds of backpacks filled with school supplies to the children of the working poor, or whose parents have no extra money whatsoever. We want all of our students to have everything they need so they can be ready for the school year.

We are grateful to the many organizations and individuals who provided the backpacks for our successful giveaway. We also still provide over 700 meals a day and run a 10-month drug and alcohol recovery program for the poor and homeless men and women who come to us for help. We cannot do this without you! We do not receive any government funding.

Thank you for your thoughtful gifts which keep this machine called the Ventura County Rescue Mission going strong!
